I Bought Navy Plaid & The Black Mini Umbrellas
I bought both this umbrella & the Mini Plaid in navy. To compare, the black is a bit longer at 22" & larger around at 45" coverage arc diameter. The black mini umbrella is a bit heavier and its soft wrist band is unobtrusive and big enough to easily slip over my large women's hand. I love the plaid mini, but black umbrella's handle/wrist loop design is more comfortable & user friendly. The harder, flexible leather/leather like wrist band on this navy plaid can be used to easily hang up on a hook, but the overall loop size & its placement on the handle along with its hardware does lack as it could be better. I can squeeze my medium/largewomen's hand through the loop, but it is uncomfortable doing so.
The handles are the same size on each umbrella, but the push button (black) is located close to the handle edge (bit more convenient) whereas the plaid push button is a good 1/4" up on its metal tube where it connects to the wood handle (not a big deal, but it's more hidden under the umbrella spikes when closed).
The plaid features a nice snap closure on the umbrella & its storage bag/cover plus the storage bag itself is slightly larger in size making it a more user friendly than the black one. The black uses Velcro closures for the bag and for the umbrella when folding it up.
Both open & close quite well.

Perfect
Best umbrella I've ever purchased. It's very compact when closed and fits easily in my briefcase or gym bag. It's surprisingly large when opened. It's a nice city size - doesn't take up the whole sidewalk, but keeps you covered. For the money, can't beat it.

Umbrellas, yeah!
Before I bought this umbrella, I had a tough choice to make: the Tattersall Umbrella or this Mini Plaid one. Being a student, I opted for the smaller of the two just because it would be a lot easier to carry around in a book bag. Now, I've tried this umbrella in pretty bad weather and, gentlemen, it has done well. In my experience, this umbrella will stand against heavy winds (note: I am not talking about monsoon weather, but winds more likely in a Northeastern city). Also, it is an eye-turner, I caught many heads turned around with such an accessory. While I would still recommend the Tattersall for anyone not inhibited by dozens of books, the Mini Plaid Umbrella is a good, light option.

Tumi makes a compact umbrella for about the same price, but it has both auto-open and auto-close features.

Thank you for your inquiry, we sincerely apologize for the delay in responding. This umbrella is quite popular, even in our corporate offices. While it does have an auto-open feature, it does not have auto-close functionality. We hope this information is helpful.
