The one I purchased does have real working front pockets. The front pockets came stitched closed as it customary for fine suits and coats, they simply have to be unstitched to become working pockets.

Yes, there are two front exterior pockets that are about empire waist high. I'm sure you've seen a sailor in a peacoat with his hands in pockets to his front at the mid-drift. They are corduroy lined and very warm. All you need is a seam ripper and a good eye to remove the stitched in thread BB put in to keep the pockets flat for shipping/display purposes.

Yes it is a tighter fit than normal. Not much but enough for you to go up one size to wear a coat underneath.

Our Classic Pea Coat is an excellent choice for the colder weather, it may be worn with work clothes for a dressed-up look, or with chinos and jeans for a more casual statement. Based off your measurements, we would recommend that you select an Extra-Large in order to provide sufficient room when the coat is layered over your bulky winter clothing.

The blue wool BB Car Coat fits well in size M; it is a trim fit, not necessarily the best fit over a suit coat.
A note: the Sizing Chart on the website does not provide relevant / sufficient information for this particular coat.

Since this item is intended to go over multiple layers, it is best to size up to take into account the added bulk. I usually go up one size from a suit on nice coats or overcoats to easily accomodate the suit or sweater. The Brooks pea is a full fit. So not a slim fit as shirts are. I would recommend 40R.
