PIECING
All cordovan belts must be constructed out of a number of pieces, because the rump on the horse cannot yield a strip of leather long enough for a man's belt. The differences among the belts are where the piecing occurs, and how it is constructed. I personally am not crazy about the Brooks Brothers cordovan belt construction; it's unusual for Brooks to put out a garment that doesn't look really "finished."

Cordovan Belts
I love cordovan leather and have enjoyed cordovan shoes and belts for many years. This belt is lighter than others I have but looks very nice and, hopefully, will wear like the older belts.

Shell Cordovan 3 panel belt
I'm writing this primarily in response to the previous poster. ALL men's shell cordovan belts come in three panels, sewn together. Seeing that shell comes from the subcutaneous rump of horses, rump size makes it impossible to create a single-panel belt.
I purchased this belt several months ago and have been happy with its appearance and performance.

Not as burgundy as I would like but a great belt
I bought this belt to go with the BB cordovan boots. The boots are more burgundy than the belt which is closer to chesnut. Overall, it is a great belt with quality cordovan, leather liner, and strap.
On a side note, the belt is made out of three pieces of cordovan as most cordovan is just enought to make one pair of shoes so they had to piece together three pieces. However, this is done very well and is sewn with a half-circle.

Answer:
It is 1 1/8, not anywhere close to 1 1/2 - it is quite narrow. Most BB belts seem to be 1/4 thinner than advertised - at least the ones I've seen. I1 year, 4 months ago

Answer:
Shell Cordovan is made from the subcutaneous rump of horses. These rounded pieces of cordovan are called "shells," as a description of their shape. There is no manufacturer named Shell.People use the term Shell Cordovan to distinguish between the color and the material. Sometimes folks describe shoes as Cordovan-colored, but that does not mean they are made from Shell Cordovan.

Answer:
Yes, cordovan is commonly referred to as "shell" and they are one and the same. The rest of the horse hide is not called cordovan.1 year, 4 months ago

Answer:
Shell Cordovan is just another name for Cordovan. It is leather made from the fibrous flat muscle (or shell) beneath the hide on the rump of the horse. The leather derives its name from the city of Cordoba, Spain, where it was originally prepared by the Moors. The reason why Cordovan is expensive is that the leather must come from the butt of the horse, and I believe that one horse can provide leather for only one pair of shoes. The hide is passed through a splitting-machine which removes the grain, or hair side, revealing what is termed the "shell". That's where the word "shell" comes from. It has nothing to do with Shell Oil. :)1 year, 5 months ago

Hello, thank you for your inquiry into our Cordovan Belt. Typically, we do advise customers to select one size up for a proper fit. This is to account for the thickness of the belt.Kind regards,
