I want to buy this item as a gift for someone who may need to hold 20 or so business cards to pass out at meetings.
i.e., it needs some capacity and for the price of the item, I don't want him to "overtax" it.

Yes, it will hold about 20 and maybe even 30 (depends on how thick the cards are). Also, leather stretches so with time, it will fit a few more.
