Paper straw is actually quite durable. It is paper that has been tinted, embossed and coated to look like real straw. It takes on the same properties as real straw in that it can be blocked for a structured hat, or not blocked for a softer floppy shape.

While it is referred to as "straw", Panama straw is actually a reed that grows in the shallow waters of Ecuador, where it is also woven. It is cut and woven into a circular straw shape by weavers who work while sitting in the water so it remains damp and pliable. The thinner and younger the reed, the more valuable, as it requires more time and greater dexterity to weave. It is considered one of the most valuable straws.

This particular hat is a summer favorite- it may be paired with a linen shirt and pants for a casual, backyard affair or linen pants and a lightweight solid-colored blazer for an event that is a bit more formal. Try to avoid wearing it with madras, gingham or plaid as it will appear entirely too busy. In addition, you should be careful to wear this hat with any of our novelty pants (MR00220 or MR00215) lest you not be taken seriously. We recommend a pair of classic chinos, in khaki or perhaps even light blue. You may choose from our four fits, with our most popular being Clark (MR00115). Paired with our Irish Linen Solid Sport Shirt in blue or light blue (in either Slim or Regular fit) these chinos will complement the hat without overpowering it. Essentially, less is more... don't go overboard integrating patterns and keep the colors simple (white, navy, light blue and khaki).
