Best Underwear ever My husband never commented on his underwear until I bought him Brooks Brothers. He immediately could tell a difference in the quality of the materials. It is very durable and holds up well after months of washing - even though I don't follow the fabric care instructions and use hot water with bleach. I read your question just now! I had the same issue. Buy the Large size not the XL. I had to return the XL and got the large and they fit perfectly. I'm also a size 40. Hope this helped?

Try the XL if you like a relaxed fit. The X might be a bit snug. I wear a 38 waist and bought the medium but I like a snug fit, and they are snug. Cheers!

I have a 36 waist, and wear medium. If you are 40, large may work. To be on the safe side, get extra large. Or buy a pack of each. They are very comfortable and you will enjoy wearing them.

Based on the information provided, it seems you would be on the higher end of size L (underwear for size L is for waist sizes 38-40). XL might be too big (waist size 42-44).
