Rated 5 out of 5 by A true classic I was originally a sceptic but I took the leap and never looking back. Wasn't sure if I could pull this off with black tie but I love these slippers. I still feel that I am upholding the standards of formal footwear but I differentiate myself just enough from the crowd when I wear these. I'm pretty conservative and went plain without any embroidery and I am happy with my choice. Extremely comfortable too! January 7, 2013

They were designed to be worn after your day wear shoes, like any other slipper, except that these could be worn away from home to attend dinner or other evening engagements away from home, such as the theatre or Opera or just to have a whiskey with Phineas Fog at the Adventurer's club before going home to bed. The shoe has a bedroom slipper upper, lined in soft velvet, like a bedroom slipper, but with a hard leather sole for use on short walks along public sidewalks or "pavements" as they are called in London. There are Alberts many times more expensive than the BB slipper, but I challenge anyone to find a single improvement in the quality of the more expensive brands above the BB slipper. These were also designed for formal dinner wear, like the tux, and they look absolutely 007 with black velvet suits. Of course, they are millions of times more comfortable than hard crackly patent leather as well, and much more classy. Both Mr Bean and Mr James Bond would wear them to the grocer or to the Casino with a Saville Row tux. May 11, 2012

This is a personal choice. the design of the shoe, with the internal fabric lining, was intended to be an actual slipper capable of wearing with or without socks. That is why it is called a slipper.

When Alberts were designed they were not all the high quality they are today, so they were easily replaced and did not need to last very long. Barefoot use was common, hence the design.

How do you wear your normal bedroom slippers? With or without socks?

Most people prefer to wear socks in order to protect the shoe, which is my own preference as well, but I wear a very thin sock to enjoy the "feeling" of barefoot use without risking the shoe.

Well, it depends. If you wear these with a tuxedo, I would highly recommend some kind of socks, preferably silk. Most will agree that wearing the slippers of this kind with a tuxedo and no socks would raise an impression you wont like. Otherwise, if you wear them at home as your house shoes, it will be appropriate to wear them either way and others wont disapprove.

I have a pair of Velvet Slippers (not Brooks, but similar nonetheless) and I wear them casually without socks. I've never worn them for a formal event (I tend to stick with Patent lace ups), so I can't give you advice there.

I think that's up to you and depends on what you're wearing. One can wear them without socks or with a pair of colored/patterned socks.

All shoes fit differently depending on last, manufacturer, style etc.

BB know their products well, and it is fairly safe to order your actual shoe size, but, of course, everyone does have unique feet and sometimes sizing up or down might become necessary.

I'd recommend size 9 because the inner liner makes them a bit tight for your usual shoe size, but if you choose to buy your size 8.5, it will take a few days to break them in.

I find the best products for these shoes are the French "Saphir" cleaners. They have a velvet cleaner as well as advice on how to clean them.

If you are afraid of damaging them further, then take them to a reputable cobbler who should be able to sort the problem out quite quickly

You need to get a really good quality waterproofing spray from your local cobbler and spray them a few times, even if you never wear them in the rain. This will protect the uppers and keep them looking new and fresh.

Of course, these are really designed to be worn out of the rain and snow, but if you must wear them in the wet, try to waterproof them properly first.

Try to avoid waterproof products which contain silicone.

A good application of "Burgol Ledersohlenoel" on the soles will help to maintain the leather soles and they will soften slightly and last a lot longer with treatment. The added advantage of sole oil is it helps to keep the moisture out of the shoe.

If you are wearing black formal dress, especially black formal tux trousers, then they will look stunning, very elegant.

The original Albert slipper was designed for exactly this purpose.

Your shoes don't have to match your tie. Tread carefully with colored bow tie / tuxedo combinations - don't match your bow tie and cummerbund, unless they are both black.

1- Shoe trees are always good to
a) prevent the shoe from bowing and maintaining a good shape and
b) helps to keep the shoe looking brand new for a very long time and
b) to draw humidity away from the leather/suede
2- Cedar is best for drawing humidity and it has the added benefit of lovely smells which also discourage insects and other crawlies.

I use stained and polished Dasco Knightsbridge shoe trees because the regular cedar shoe trees may damage the lining due to it's rather coarse finish.
