I bought them in burgundy (Alden #8) and the color goes well with just about every color I have tried to pair them with. Extremely comfortable and well made shoes. They slip on like loafers. The letter is the width of the shoe. D is for a foot of typical width. E is wider, and C is narrower. There also are A, B, and EE, EEE, EEEE, and so on.

That's the fitting or width. A D is average width. The widths that are narrower or wider change by about 1/8" either way. This may not seem like much but on your foot even small differences are significant. And when you buy a shoe there should be about a thumb's space at the front for the shoe to fit correctly in most models.

The alpha means the width. D is medium (standard width) while A-C would be narrow and E would be wide width.

I say start with an 8.5E. The Van last, which the loafer is made on, runs big.
