You should buy either a 40 or 42. The general rule is to buy a belt that is 2” larger than your waist size. Ideally, your husband would buy a size 41, but since there is no size 41, we suggest a size 42.

That would probably be a little too long. I have a 35" waist and buy belts in 36. At that, I usually use the second-to-the first hole. With 3-4" difference between waist and belt size, it would probably be too long.
