CORDOVAN FOOTWEAR

Suiting
enuine shell cordovan leather is the art of tanning at its finest. Regarded as one of the most luxurious and durable leathers available, our cordovan footwear collection draws on centuries-old techniques of tanning and hand finishing. The resulting leathers are remarkably soft, supple and durable. The reward for this level of care is considerable. Cordovan leather responds to meticulous craftsmanship with unmatched luster.

While most leathers take a single month to cure, the tanning process for cordovan leather takes a full six months to complete. The leather undergoes a natural vegetable tanning process, after which it is stained, glazed and finished individually by hand over a six-month period that requires the steady pace of craftsmanship and patience.

SuitingTo say that something is made out of true shell cordovan, it is usually referred to as "genuine cordovan" or "genuine shell cordovan" which is known to develop a beautiful patina with age, particularly the burgundy "cordovan" color.

While cordovan is made in a variety of colors and leathers, it is the dark, reddish-brown cordovan leather that is the most distinguished. Superior in comfort and quality, genuine cordovan creates extraordinary footwear that fits the enduring style and standards of Brooks Brothers.

How to Care for Your Footwear

To care for your calfskin leather footwear, we recommend one light application of our Brooks Brothers Cream Shoe Polish. This polish should be applied with a soft, clean cloth. For shoes greatly in need of extra care, apply individual light coats of polish and buff between coats using a shoe brush. One brush should be reserved for light, neutral-toned footwear, another for dark footwear. Use a neutral polish to maintain luster, and a tinted polish every third or fourth polishing to maintain color. To conceal scrapes and scuffs, use a polish that is similar to, or a shade or two lighter than the color of the shoes.

Cordovan leather contains natural oils that help maintain its impressive luster. Gently buffing the leather with a soft, dry cloth will restore the shine should the leather become dull. Neutral polishes should never be used on cordovan, nor should spray shines or waterproofing. We suggest a single, light application of paste wax which will give your cordovan leather superior shine.

If your shoes get wet, allow them time to dry naturally. For leather footwear, once your shoes are completely dry, apply a few applications rather than one heavy application of our Brooks Brothers Cream Shoe Polish to restore their shine. For cordovan leather, use our Paste Wax.

Shoe trees. Our cedar shoe trees will help increase the lifespan of your shoes, as well as help to maintain their finely crafted shape by removing moisture and odor absorbed by the leather and lining.

Give your shoes a rest. Alternate your footwear to allow your shoes to return to their natural moisture levels.

FOOTWEAR GLOSSARY

CALFSKIN: High-grade calfskin is a fine-grained leather that withstands scuffing, wears well and polishes to a high, clear finish.

EXOTIC LEATHERS: Exotic leathers include shark, fish, alligator or other unusual animal skins. The unique and textured appearance of exotic leather gives manufacturers of today's contemporary footwear options for producing new and creative styles

LINING: The layer of leather used to cover the inside of the shoe. Brooks Brothers uses fine, vegetable-tanned leather linings for absorption and comfort.

PATENT LEATHER: Patent leather is finished to a hard, glossy surface and coated with varnish or enamel. Its shiny elegance has long been associated with dressy and formal shoes.

SUEDE AND NUBUCK: Suede has a napped surface and is made from the buffed inner surface of calfskin or kidskin. Nubuck is produced by buffing the exterior of the hide.

WELT: A strip of leather that joins the upper to the sole, welts give added flexibility to a shoe. A quality shoemaker can resole a shoe many times by removing an old sole from the welt and then stitching a new one in place, using the older stitch holes as a guide.

CAPTOE: A plaintoe with a leather "cap" stitched in place over the toebox. The edge of the "cap" that is closest to the lace area usually has a straight cut edge and two or three rows of stitching to hold it in place. also known as a straight captoe.

PERFORATED CAPTOE: Looks very much like the captoe, but the edge closest to the lace area, where it is stitched in place, has perforations in the leather. also known as perf captoe.

GOODYEAR® WELT CONSTRUCTION: A welt is stitched to the upper and the insole rib at the point where the upper curves under the last. The hollow between the upper and the sole is then filled with granulated cork. The cork provides support, cushioning and breathability. The sole is then sewn to the welt with a chain stitch through a channel in the sole leather. The main advantage to Goodyear welt construction is that if the upper part of the shoe is maintained properly, the shoe may be resoled repeatedly when the leather outsole becomes worn.

THE MONK STRAP: A style in which a strap comes over the instep of the vamp, and is closed with a buckle on the outstep side of the shoe.

PENNY LOAFER: A slip-on shoe with a slotted strap in which a penny can be placed.
