The Heritage Shop: Seersucker Style

A Cool Summer
The Heritage Shop

Naturally Airy

In the 1930s, before air conditioning was customary, summer wardrobes relied on lightweight, cooling fabrics to keep wearers comfortable in the heat. Enter Seersucker. Originally woven from silk, it was discovered that using the same weaving pattern with cotton threads resulted in a durable, lightweight fabric that breathed beautifully in high heat and humidity. Brooks Brothers popularized the updated fabric in America with our seersucker suits, shorts and more. To this day we include seersucker styles in our spring-summer collections.

Clothes Of Milk & Sugar

The seersucker name originates from the Persian words “milk” and “sugar.” The texture of the fabric was likened to the smoothness of milk, juxtaposed with the rumpled contrast, of a pile of sugar crystals. The slight puckering is crucial to its summertime popularity. It creates small air pockets against the skin to promote steady airflow that cools the wearer. Made with Brooks Brothers trusted quality, seersucker is one of our go-to summer fabrics for comfort and style.
